Detailed Solution

There were two main systems of indigo cultivation of Nij and ryoti. Under the NIJ cultivation system, the planter produced indigo on the lands directly controlled by him. He purchased or rented the land from other zamindars and then produced indigo by hiring labourers. It was difficult for the planters to expand the area under NIJ cultivation. Indigo could only be grown on fertile lands, which were already densely populated. Only small plots scattered across the landscape were available for purchase. Planters required large areas to cultivate indigo. They attempted to lease the indigo factory land and evict the peasants.
