Detailed Solution

The Rowlatt Act empowered the British government to imprison anyone without a trial.
In the year 1919, the British government passed the Rowlatt Act. It was the Rowlatt Act which empowered the British government to imprison anyone without a trial. The act was responsible for curbing fundamental rights like freedom of expression. In addition to this, the Rowlatt Act also strengthened the powers of the police. Prominent leaders including Mahatma Gandhi, Mohammad Ali Jinnah and others as well, felt that the act was very harsh and that the government had no right to restrict people’s basic freedoms. The act was regarded as devilish and tyrannical. Mahatma Gandhi, in 1919, decided to call for satyagraha against the Rowlatt Act.
