The city of Shanghai turned out to be the epicenter of the new print culture. This cultural upliftment was mainly to meet the demands of Western-style schools. The end of the 17th century depicted that print was not only needed by the scholarly officials in China but also by the merchants who started to use print in their day-to-day life as they started collecting trade information. It was also to meet the need for a new readership section, that a fictional narrative started to come into existence. Along with fiction, autobiography and romantic plays also began to gather importance. Women from former-class households seriously started to read and write and hence they also started writing their poetries. Towards the end of the 19th Century, there started to be a gradual shift from personal printing to westernized mechanical printing to cater to the needs of the readers.
