Imine formation generally takes place fastest between pH 4 and 5 and is slow at very low or very high pH. We can understand why an acid catalyst is necessary if we consider the mechanism that has been proposed for imine formation. The important step is the step in which the protonated aminoalcohol loses a molecule of water to become an iminium ion. By protonating the alcohol group, the acid converts a poor leaving group (an - OH group) into a good one (an -OH2 + group).
