During the 19th century, thousands of people fled from Europe to America. They did so in search of a good livelihood because, in Europe, the cities were crowded, and deadly diseases were spreading across the continent. Poverty and hunger were common there. Religious conflicts were present, and some of the religious dissenters were prosecuted. Many of these immigrants were from Northern and Western Europe. Famine was also a reason for people fleeing from Europe.
