Q.

Three identical balls ball I, ball II and ball III are placed on a smooth floor on a straight line at the separation of 10m between balls as shown in figure. Initially balls are stationary. Ball I is given velocity of 10m/s towards ball II. Collision between ball I and II. is inelastic with coefficient of restitution 0.5 but collision between ball III and II is perfectly elastic. The time interval between two consecutive collisions between ball I and II is________ sec.

e=0.5,u1=10m/s,u2=0m/s

Istcase:

v1=(1e2)u

=(10.52)10=2.5m/s

v2=(1+e2)u=(1+0.52)10

=7.5m/s

Question Image Question Image

Equal masses velocities will interchange

t=sv=10075=43

v3=0

v4=7.5m/s

Distance between to get 1st ball with 2nd

For 2nd collision t=sv=203×2.5=83

Remaining distance =203

Total time =83+43  =4secs
