Three or four vats were needed to manufacture the dye. The Indigo harvest was taken to the factory and contained in fermented vessels or storage vessels called vats. Each vat functioned separately. Firstly the indigo leaves were soaked in warm water for hours in a vat to boil. Later the liquid drained into another vat. In the second vat, the drained solution was stirred with paddles. Lime water was added. It was drained and transferred into another vat. After that, it was pressed and dried for sale.
