When cellulose fibers from wood, rags, grasses, or other vegetable sources are mechanically or chemically processed in water, a thin sheet of material called paper is produced. The material is pressed and dried after the water drains through a tiny screen, leaving the fibers equally spaced across the top. It is a versatile material used in various industrial and construction activities and for printing, packaging, decorating, writing, cleaning, filter paper, wallpaper, book endpapers, conservation paper, laminate worktops, toilet tissue, and money and security paper. Before paper production became industrialized, recovered textile fibers from old garments, known as rags, were the most widely utilized source of fiber.
