Through old literature, Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar proposed Widow remarriage. In 1856, a law was passed that made widow remarriage acceptable. More areas of the country started to adopt widow remarriage by the second part of the nineteenth century. Even though widow remarriage was fiercely opposed and viewed as a gross violation of Hindu customs, the Hindu Widows' Remarriage Act, 1856, was adopted. The law was completed personally by Lord Dalhousie. The Hindu Widows' Remarriage Act was forced on July 16, 1856. This act also provided for all the rights and inheritances they had at the time of her first marriage.
