In animals, gases are exchanged through the process of diffusion in which the gas molecules move from the region of their higher concentration to the region of their lower concentration.

Diffusion is a process in which transport is driven by a concentration gradient. 

Blood that is low in oxygen concentration and high in carbon dioxide concentration undergoes gas exchange with air in the lungs.
