Thulasi is a daily wage agricultural labourer, who usually works on the paddy fields of Ramalingam, a rich farmer with many businesses. She earns Rs. 40 per day for her service on the farm. Her husband is also a daily wage labourer who usually does the work of spraying pesticides over the crops to protect them from insects and diseases. Having her two daughters to feed, Thulsai is forced to work for less than she would like as a labourer to run the household with her husband. She is like those thousands of poor, helpless labourers who have no choice but to work on bare minimum wages to support their families.
