Animals were transported alive from America to Europe until the 1870s, where they were then slaughtered. But the space required by live animals on the ship was considerable. Many also passed away while travelling, got sick, lost weight, or lost the ability to eat. Therefore, meat was an expensive luxury that the poor in Europe couldn't afford. Up to the invention of new technology, specifically refrigerated ships, which allowed the transportation of perishable commodities across vast distances, high prices, in turn, held demand and production down.
