Till the First World War, European managing agencies controlled a large sector of Indian industries. The areas where Indian merchants could operate were further restricted as British control over trade grew tighter. They were unable to trade in manufactured items with Europe and were instead forced to export food grains, raw cotton, opium, wheat, and indigo as needed by the British. Additionally, they lost ground in the shipping industry over time. Until the First World War, European management agencies dominated a major percentage of Indian business. Three of the largest were Bird Heilgers & Co., Andrew Yule, and Jardine Skinner & Co.
