Detailed Solution

Tipu's sword was made of Wootz steel. The famous swords of Tipu are part of priceless collections in English museums. The edges of the swords were so hard and sharp that they could readily pierce an opponent's armour. The Wootz high carbon steel, which was manufactured all throughout south India, gave the blade its exceptional quality. Swords manufactured of wootz steel have an extremely sharp edge. In Mysore, hundreds of smelters made wootz steel. Iron was combined with charcoal and placed in little clay pots for the furnaces. The production of steel ingots used to make swords by the smelters required careful temperature control. Wootz is an English variation of the steel-referring words ukku in Kannada, hukku in Telugu, and urukku in Tamil and Malayalam.
