TISCO was started in the year 1907 at Sakchi. Before independence, that is, before 1947, the TISCO steel plant was privately-owned, but after independence, the government of India took various steps/ initiatives to set up other iron and steel plants in the country, a step toward the development of the country. The TISCO iron and steel plant was set up in Sakchi in 1907 near Subarnarekha and Kharkai Rivers in Jharkhand; Sakchi was later renamed Jamshedpur.
