Mahatma Gandhi felt the need to bring Hindus and Muslims close together to launch a board based movement in India.
Maulana Azad, Hakim Ajmal Khan, and Hasrat Mohani formed a Khilafat Committee in Bombay. Gandhi believed that by this Khilafat issue, he could unite the Hindus and Muslims and launch movements against the British government. Gandhi felt that, as a result, the people of India could stand firm in front of any repressive laws made by the government and fight for their freedom.
