Detailed Solution

To protest against the salt tax, Mahatma Gandhi undertook Dandi March in 1930.
Salt was consumed by both the wealthy and the poor. According to Mahatma Gandhi, the tariff on salt and the government's monopoly over its manufacture exposed the most repressive aspect of British rule. The British refused to compromise with the salt law. Thus, Mahatma Gandhi and 78 of his trustworthy volunteers began the salt march. From Gandhi's ashram at Sabarmati to Gujarat's seaside town of Dandi, the march covered a distance of more than 240 kilometres. He arrived in Dandi on April 6, 1930, and ceremonially broke the law by boiling seawater to make salt.
