Biodiversity hotspots are the regions with very high levels of species richness and high degree of endemism. These are also the regions of accelerated habitat loss. To qualify as a biodiversity hotspot, an area must meet two strict criteria:
  •           Contain at least 1,500 species of vascular plants found nowhere else on Earth (endemic species).
  •           Have lost at least 70 percent of its primary native vegetation.

  • All the biodiversity hotspots put together cover less than 2 per cent of the Earth’s land area.
