Detailed Solution

We need to determine what should be divided from its numerator and denominator to reduce a rational number to its standard form.
A rational number is said to be in its standard form when its denominator is a positive integer and there are no common factors between the numerator and the denominator.
Also, we know that HCF or the highest common factor of a number is the largest possible factor which divides the number without leaving any remainder.
So, in order to reduce a rational number to its standard form, we divide the numerator and denominator by such a factor which is common to both, so that there are no other factors left, except 1.
For example: 12 24 is a rational number, and the highest possible number which can divide 12 and 24 is 12, which is also their HCF.
Hence, the correct option is (2).
