Detailed Solution

To suppress the freedom of the Indian press, Lord Lytton passed the Vernacular Press Act. The legislation was proposed by Lord Lytton, who served as the Viceroy of India from 1876 to 1880. Its goal was to stop the local press from criticising British policy, particularly the opposition that had grown since the start of the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878–80). If a newspaper published something that the government deemed to be "objectionable," the Act allowed the government to seize the newspaper's assets, including its printing presses. Lord Ripon revoked this law in 1881.
