At present, there are a total of 25 High Courts in India. The High Court is the highest judicial authority at the level of a state or a union territory. The first High Court to be established in India was the Calcutta High Court which came into being on 2 July 1862. High Courts exercise their powers when the cases are beyond the authority or territory of lower courts. They can also look into the matters of violation of fundamental rights of the individuals.
