Totipotency: The capacity to generate a whole plant from a living plant cell/explant is called totipotency. It is the basis for plant tissue culture technology.

Plants cells are unique because when a differentiated plant cell treated with right concentrations of PGR (Auxin and Cytokinin), will undergo dedifferentiation and become meristematic.

So any living plant tissue can be taken as starting material (Explant) and reprogrammed by appropriate treatment to generate a whole plant.

Through tissue culture technique, a large number of plants can be produced in less time and space. All the plantlets generated are genetically and morphologically identical.
