After Nadir Shah invaded and conquered Delhi in 1739, Mughal artists fled to the highlands to escape the unpredictability of the plains. The Kangra school of painting was established when they discovered willing buyers there. By the middle of the eighteenth century, miniature painting had been given a new energy by the Kangra artists.
