Detailed Solution

Transverse waves travel only in solids, but longitudinal waves travel in every state of matter.
In a transverse wave, particles oscillate up and down about their mean position rather than along the line of wave propagation. Thus, a transverse wave is one in which the individual particles of the medium move in a direction perpendicular to the direction of wave propagation.
Transverse waves are light waves. Transverse waves can only be generated in solids and on liquid surfaces.
Individual medium particles move in a direction parallel to the propagation direction of the disturbance in these waves. The particles do not move from one place to another but instead oscillate back and forth about their resting position.
Sound waves are longitudinal waves. Longitudinal waves can be generated in solids, liquids, and gases.
