Tribal people practised Jhum cultivation. It was carried out on tiny plots of land, primarily in forests. To allow sunlight to reach the ground, the cultivators cut the treetops and burned the foliage on the land to clear it for agriculture. They distribute the potash-containing ash from the burning to fertilise the earth. They felled trees with an axe and scratched the soil with a hoe to prepare it for cultivation. Instead of ploughing the area and spreading the seeds, they broadcast or scattered them on the field. They relocated to another field once the produce was ripe and harvested.
