Tropical cyclones are common on the eastern coast.
Tropical cyclones are the strong destructive winds originating in the tropical oceans and moving towards the coastal areas. They have very high speed and are violent, causing harm to life and property. These winds are associated with torrential rainfall and hit the coastal states of India like Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Kerala, and Gujarat. Generally, the eastern coast is more prone to these cyclones. The destruction of crops by these winds, when they are almost ready for harvest, is a cause of farmers’ suicides in the country. Ockhi in 2017, Fani in 2019, and Tauktae and Yaas in 2021 are some cyclones that hit Indian coasts.
