Friction opposes the motion of two objects in contact. It is caused due to interlocking of irregularities between two surfaces in contact. Therefore, it depends on the nature of the surfaces which are in contact with each other. For example, for smooth surfaces irregularities are less in number as compared to rough surfaces that result in less friction.
