True ribs are connected to the sternum by

The first seven pairs of ribs are called true ribs. They are connected directly to the sternum by their hyaline cartilages. The 8^th, 9^th and 10^th pairs of ribs do not articulate directly with the sternum but join the seventh rib with the help of hyaline cartilage.
