Given: AB = 24 cm

We know that the perpendicular from the centre of a circle to a chord bisects the chord.

Question Image

Since the line joining the centres of the circles bisects the common chord.

 AC=BC=242=12 cm

In AOC, OCA= 90o

By Pythagoras theorem,

OA2=OC2+AC2

152=OC2+122

 OC2=225-144

 OC2=81

OC=9 cm

Similarly, in AO'C, O'CA=90o

By Pythagoras theorem,

O'A2=O'C2+AC2

132=O'C2+122

O'C2=169-144

O'C2=25

O'C=5 cm

Now,  OO'=OC+O'C

OO'=9+5=14 cm

Hence, the distance between the centres of the circles is 14 cm.
