Let C1 and C2 be the centres of two circles of radii r1 and r2 respectively.  Let P be  the centre and r be the radius of a circle touching the two given  circles externally,  then  C1P=r+r1 C2P=r+r2 C1P-C2P=r1-r2=some constant    

point  P moves in such a way that the difference of its distances 
from two fixed points C1​ and C2 is constant. 
Therefore, P describes a hyperbola whose two foci are at C1
and  C2
