Allama Prabhu

Basavanna, a 12th-century social reformer and the founding saint of the Lingayat sect in Karnataka, was closely associated with two prominent companions: Allama Prabhu and Akkamahadevi. Both of these individuals played significant roles in the Vachana movement, which was aimed at reforming society by promoting a devotion to God, equality, and rejecting the rigid caste system.

1. Allama Prabhu: A spiritual leader and poet, Allama Prabhu is one of the most revered figures in the history of the Veerashaiva or Lingayat movement. He was known for his deep philosophical insights and his powerful Vachanas (poetic verses), which expressed a profound spiritual experience and a rejection of materialism. His Vachanas emphasize the concept of Self-realization and the need for a personal, direct connection with God, without intermediaries. Allama Prabhu's teachings had a lasting influence on Basavanna and the overall development of the movement.
2. Akkamahadevi: Akkamahadevi was a prominent female saint-poet in the Lingayat tradition and a contemporary of Basavanna. She was known for her unwavering devotion to Lord Shiva and her powerful Vachanas. Akkamahadevi rejected the social norms of her time, especially the practice of child marriage, and chose a life of spiritual devotion over societal expectations. Her teachings and poetry reflect a deep sense of inner devotion and the importance of surrendering to the divine.
