Detailed Solution

Given, u1=3m/s,  u2=5m/s

m1=m2=m

According to principle of conservation of linear momentum

m1u1+m2u2=m1υ1+m2υ2

m×3m×5=1+2

or     υ1+υ2=2 ….. (i)

In an elastic collision,

e=υ2υ1u1u2

  υ2υ1=eu1u2

  υ2υ1=13+5  e=1

  υ1υ2=8…. (ii)

Adding Equations (i) and (ii), we obtain

2 υ1=10

  υ1=5m/s

From Equation (i),

υ2=2υ1

=2+5=3 m/s

Thus,   υ1=5m/s,  υ2=+3m/s
