Detailed Solution

Two identical thin uniform rods of length L each are joined to form T as shown.

Question Image

Let the mass of each rod per unit length = ρ

We know uniform metal rods obviously contain the C.M at the centre of rod.

Let the centre of mass of AB is at C

i.e. AC=CB=L2

The C.M of CD is at E

i.e. CE=ED=L2

consider coordinate axis taking origin (0, 0) at D as shown.

Question Image

Now we can consider total mass of AB at C i.e m1=ρL .

Similarly total mass of CD at E i.e. m2=ρL

Coordinates of C = (0, L)

Coordinates of E =(0,L2)

We know coordinates of C.M of system of two masses.

x=m1x1+m2x2m1+m2,y=m1y1+m2y2m1+m2

We get on substituting the values

x=0

y=ρL(L)+ρL(L2)ρL+ρL  3L22=3L4

The coordinates of C.M of system of two rods kept in T shape i.e. P=(0,3L4)

Hence the distance of C.M from D=3L4 .
