Detailed Solution

Two lenses of power 3 D and -5 D are placed in contact to form a composite lens. An object is placed at a distance 50 cm from this composite lens. The position of image is - 25 cm.
Given data in the problem,
Power of the first lens  P1 = 3D
Power of the second lens P2 = -5D Position of object = -50cm
So, the total power
P= P1+ P2 P= 3 – 5 P= -2 And the focal length is,
= 1P f=1-2  f= -50 cm By using lens formula,
1v-  1u= 1f   1v- 1-50 = 1-50  1v+ 150= 1-50  1v= -1-150 1v= -250  v= -25 cm
