Q.

Two liquids A and B form an ideal solution. At uss K, vapour pressure of solution containing 1 mol of A and 3 mol of B [K 550 mm of Hg. At the same temperature, if one more mol of B [K added to the mixture, the vapour pressure of the solution [K increased by 10 mm. The vapour pressure of A and B in the pure state, will be respectively.

Detailed Solution

First solution

             P=pA0xA+pB0xB550=pA0×11+3+pB0×31+3xA=n1n1+n2=11+3xB=n2n1+n2=31+3

 or       550=pA0×0.25+pB0×0.75       ….(1)

second solution  P=pA0xA+pB0xB

Where    P=550+10=560 torr

  560=pA0×14+1+pB044+1xA=n1n1+n2=14+1;xB=n2n1+n2=44+1

or 560=pA0×0.2+pB0×0.8                 ....(2)

Total number of mol in first solution

 =1+3=4

 Total number of mol in second solution

 =1+(3+1)=5

Multiplying equation (1) by 4 and (2) by 5 and subtracting ,

we get

  2200=pA0×1+pB0×3

2800=pA0×1+pB0×4600mm=pB0  or  pB0=600mm. Ans.

Substituting pB0=600mm in (3),  we get

             2200=pA0+3×600

      pA0=22001800=400mm
