Q.

Two liquids A and B from an ideal solution. The solution has a vapour pressure of 700 torr at 80°C. It is distilled till 2/3rd of the solution is collected as condensate. The composition of the condensate is XA'=0.75 and that of the residue is XA'=0.30. If the vapour pressure of the residue at 80°C is 600 Torr, which of the following is/are true?

Detailed Solution

XAPA0+XBPB0=700   ;XA=0.6;  XB=0.4......i

XA'PA0+XB'PB0=0.30  PA0+0.70  PB0=600........ii

If moles of A & B initially are x & y then

x=0.75×23x+y+0.30×13x+y....iii

Solving (iii) xy=32

XA=xx+y=35=0.6in  the  original  liquid

Solving (i) and (ii) the get PA0=25003Torr   and  PB0=500  Torr
