Detailed Solution

Given that two numbers are in the ratio 1: 3.
Also given that 5 is added to both the numbers, the ratio becomes 1: 2.
We know that a rational number is in the form of p q , where p denotes the numerator and q the denominator.
Let us define the numerator and denominator as the numbers are in ratio 1:3.
Assume the numbers are x and 3x.
The rational number becomes 1x 3x .
When 5 is added to both the numbers, the ratio becomes 1 2 .
So, the new rational number becomes x+5 3x+5 .
Compare the above obtained rational number with 1 2 .
x+5 3x+5 = 1 2 2x+10=3x+5 x=5 Numerator = x=5 and Denominator = 3x=3×5=15 .
The numbers are 5 and 15.
The correct option is (2).
