Before we start the problem, we must keep in mind that the radius vector of any point P is actually the position vector (P V) of the point P which is the vector drawn from the origin to the point P.

So, let the origin be at O (see figure)

For equilibrium of -q3, we have

F31+F32=0 q1q34πε0r1-r33r1-r3+q2q34π ε0r2-r33r2-r3=0

Also, from figure, we see that

r^13=-r^23 r1-r3r1-r3=-r2-r3r2-r3

Put (2) in (1), we get

q1r1-r32=q2r2-r33

±q1r2-r3=q2r1-r3

Taking positive sign, we get

q1r2-q2r1=q1-q2r3   r3=q1r2-q2r1q1-q2

This must be REJECTED as it will lie outside q1 and q2

Taking negative sign, we get

q1r2+q2r1=q1+q2r3

  r3=q1r2 + q2r1q1+q2

Clearly, this position vector or radius vector will lie on the line joining q1 and q2, between them.

So, r3=q1r2+q2r1q1+q2

For q1 to be in equilibrium, let charge placed on 3 be q3, then

F12+F13=0 q1q24πε0r1-r23r1-r2+q1q34πε0r1-r33r1-r3=0

While writing the above expression, we have not taken any nature of q3.The answer will have its sign attached to q3. So, as of now q3 is assumed to be positive and then lets see what happens. Also, as per the assumption made

r1-r3r1-r22=q1q1+q22  Using (3), we get    q3=-q1q2q1+q22
