Detailed Solution

Let a satellite of mass m revolve in an orbit at a height r from the Centre of the earth. If the speed of the satellite is v, then

mv2r=GMmr2or mv2=GMmr

where M is the mass of the earth. The kinetic energy of the satellite is given by

12mv2=GMm2r

The ratio of the kinetic energies of the two satellites is ( their masses are equal)

12mv1212mv22=GMm2r1·2r2GMm=r2r1

But r1=R+R=2R and r2=R+4R=5R

Therefore, the ratio r2r1=52. Hence the correct answer is (4).
