Solids have strong intermolecular forces, so the atoms/molecules/ions are tightly packed in a solid. As a result of this, solids have fixed shapes and volumes. Liquids have weaker intermolecular forces of attraction; liquids have no fixed shape but have fixed volume. Gases have almost negligible or very weak intermolecular forces of attraction. Hence gas molecules are constantly moving randomly. Due to this, gases have no fixed shape or volume.
