An Act was passed in 1956, granting official language status to the Sinhala language. This is because of the majoritarianism adopted by the country to establish Sinhala’s supremacy, due to which the Sinhala community enjoyed immense powers by forming the government. In 1956, by passing an act, the Sinhala language was recognized as the only official language of the nation, thus neglecting the Srilankan Tamils and their culture. Even the government partially favoured the Sinhala community regarding university admissions and government jobs. A new constitution declared ‘Buddhism’ as the country's official religion. This ill-treatment resulted in a civil war in the nation in which the Srilankan Tamils struggled hard to make the government fulfil their demand to recognize Tamil also as the official language. Thus, the (R) statement is not the reason for statement (A) but is the result of (A).
