Detailed Solution

When the substance are mixed in equal volumes, then

    1+2= 2V ×4 ------(i)

When the two substances are mixed in equal masses, then

    mρ1+mρ2 = 2m3----(ii)

From eq.(i): ρ1 + ρ2 = 8

From eq. (ii): 1ρ1+1ρ2 = 23

or ρ1+ρ2ρ1ρ2 = 23

or 9ρ1ρ2 = 23 or ρ1ρ2 = 12------(iv)

Now, ρ1 - ρ2 = [(ρ1+ρ2)2-4ρ1ρ2]12------(v)

Solving eqs. (iii) and (v), we get ρ1 = 6 and ρ2 = 2
