Let the time taken by the tap with a larger diameter be t hours then,
Time taken by the tap with a smaller diameter be (t-9) hours.
According to question,
1t+1t-9=16
t+t-9t(t-9)=16
2t-9t2-9t=16
62t-9=t2-9t
12t-54=t2-9t
t2-12t-9t+54=0
t2-21t+54=0
t2-18t-3t+54-0
tt-18-3t-18=0
t-3t-18=0
t-3=0 or t-18=0
 t=3 or t=18
Therefore, t=18 hours. So,
 t-9=18-9=9hours
Hence, the time required for each tank separately is 18 hours and 9 hours respectively.
