Detailed Solution

Concept- Hardness is brought on by the presence of chloride and sulphide salts as well as the development of insoluble carbonate salts. Some types of hardness can be eliminated through a straightforward method, while others call for the application of a specific treatment. Water is the most vital component of life on earth. The absence of dissolved salts in rainwater, despite the presence of certain dissolved gases, makes it the cleanest type of water.
Two types of water hardness can be distinguished:
1) Temporary hardness
2) Permanent hardness
The magnesium and calcium carbonates in the water cause temporary hardness. These salts are transformed into insoluble magnesium and calcium hydroxides and precipitated magnesium and calcium hydroxides upon boiling, which can then be separated by filtration. Therefore, boiling can be used to eliminate short-term hardness.
Magnesium and calcium are present in water as sulphates and chloride salts, which cause the water to become permanently hard. Permanent hardness refers to the fact that we cannot dissolve them through heat. Adding washing soda to the water can soften it permanently. When magnesium and calcium chlorides and sulphides react with washing soda, insoluble salts of carbonates are created. This is the process used to turn hard water into soft water.
Hence, the correct answer is option 2.
