Under Suraj Mal the kingdom of Bharatpur emerged as a strong state.
Bharatpur became a powerful state under Suraj Mal during 1756-1763 AD. Jat's power reached its peak during his reign. Bharatpur kingdom developed into a mighty nation under Suraj Mal. Many of the city's famous people took refuge in Bharatpur when Nadir Shah sacked Delhi in 1739. His son Jawahir Shah, who had 30,000 troops, hired another 20,000 Marathas and 15,000 Sikhs to fight the Mughals. Bharatpur Fort is built in quite a traditional style. The most prominent ruler of Bharatpur was Maharaja Suraj Mal.
Suraj Mal conquered the Bharatpur site from Khemkaran Sogaria, son of Rustam, in 1733 and founded the city of Bharatpur in 1743. He fortified the city by building a great wall around the city and began to live in Bharatpur this year. 1753.
