Under MGNREGA, work is provided to people in rural areas for 100 days.
The Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee Act was introduced in 2005 to emphasise the people’s right to work. The main objective of this scheme was to provide work to people in rural areas who need work and can work. The result is provided to these people 100 days a year. If the government can not give them work, it has to pay them unemployment compensation. This was implemented in about 625 districts across India. Under this scheme, work that can increase land productivity is done.
