Under Suraj Mal's leadership, Bharatpur emerged as a strong Jat state. The Jats grew more powerful in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Successful farmers, the Jats. Under Suraj Mal, the kingdom of Bharatpur grew to be a stronghold. After Nadir Shah captured Delhi in 1739, many of Delhi's well-known figures sought asylum there. Jawahir Shah recruited 20,000 Maratha and 15,000 Sikh men in addition to his own 30,000 soldiers to aid him in battling the Mughals. The Jats built a beautiful garden palace in Dig that combined the architectural styles of Amber and Agra, in contrast to the very conventional construction of the Bharatpur fort.
