Under the leadership of Jawaharlal Nehru, the Congress party sought to build a modern secular democratic republic in India. The Congress Party is one of the oldest parties in the world. It was founded in 1885 and has witnessed a couple of splits in the coming years. It played a dominant role in Indian politics at the national and state level for several decades after India’s Independence. It ruled at the centre till 1977 from the Independence of the country, then again from 1980 to 1989, post that, its support and influence slowly declined. It can be considered to be a Centrist party that is neither inclined toward the Rightist nor the Leftist in its ideological stance.
