Under Jawaharlal Nehru's leadership, the Lahore Congress formalised the demand for "Purna Swaraj," or complete independence, for India in December 1929. It was decided that January 26, 1930, would be observed as Independence Day and that on this day, people would pledge to fight for complete independence. However, relatively little attention was paid to the celebrations. Therefore, Mahatma Gandhi had to figure out how to connect this impersonal concept of freedom to more specific problems encountered in daily life.
