Union Jack was the British flag. The English country eventually controlled the other three island states through a consistent rise in property, wealth, and power. The United Kingdom of Great Britain was created in 1707 due to the Act of Union between England and Scotland. With the rise of English supremacy, the English forcibly dismantled Scotland's cultural and political institutions, forbade the Scots from speaking Gaelic, and forced them to don national attire. In Ireland, there were two groups of people: Catholics and Protestants. In 1801, the English repressed the Catholics with the aid of the Protestants and forcibly merged Ireland into the United Kingdom. The symbols of the new Britain—the National Flag (Union Jack), the National Anthem (God save our Noble King) and the English language were promoted.
